Sebelius reflects WH’s new attitude: Public option not ‘essential’

More health care stuff.

The public health care options is not “essential,” and consumer choice, market competition and reform of private health insurance regulations should be the focus of the health care debate, Heath and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNN’s John King Sunday.

But Sebelius, who as health secretary would presumably be in charge of a public health care system, also said that coverage for all Americans was still one of the administration’s goals, regardless of whether or not that comes by way of a public health option.

Sebelius said that “what’s important is choice and competition, and I’m convinced at the end of the day the plan will have both of those. But [a public option] is not the essential element.”
