Could Cleaner Air Actually Intensify Global Warming?

Oh the irony. I think things like this are funny. For years, they wanted to get the pollutants out of the air (and rightfully so, I would say). So they removed them, and all was well. But then “global warming” appeared and now we find that those pollutants supposedly kept our planet cooler. It’s a real quandary there; pollute and cool the planet, or have clean air and face certain doom from the heat. Those of us who don’t believe in the whole man made global warming “problem” would rather have the clean air.

From NPR:

As much of the world marked Earth Day this past week, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that air pollution has declined dramatically over the past 20 years. It sounds like good news, but science writer Eli Kintisch argues that there’s a surprising downside: Cleaner air might actually intensify global warming.

“If we continue to cut back on smoke pouring forth from industrial smokestacks, the increase in global warming could be profound,” Kintisch writes in an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times.

Kintisch isn’t talking about greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide; he’s talking about another kind of pollutant we put in the sky — “like aerosols from a spray can,” he tells NPR’s Guy Raz. “It turns out that those particles have a profound effect on maintaining the planet’s temperature.”

Global warming monitoring needs to find ‘missing heat’, say scientists

Apparently because there hasn’t been any warming in the past 10 or 15 years, the heat must be missing, but still there. This is sort of like dark matter; they say it has to be there and they spend lots of money trying to find it because without it, their theories are worthless. The article is full of the usual stuff like “they believe” and “it could” and other vague possibilities which we need to be extremely worried about.

From The Guardian:

Further study on oceans needed before hidden heat ‘comes back to haunt us’, say researchers in Colorado

Experts need to beef up ways to measure the heat content of oceans as a way to track more reliably the course of global warming, scientists say today.

Kevin Trenberth and John Fasullo, climate scientists at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, say that only about half of the heat believed to have built up in the Earth in recent years can be accounted for. New instruments are needed to locate and monitor this missing heat, they say, which could be storing up trouble for the future.

“The heat will come back to haunt us sooner or later,” Trenberth said. “The reprieve we’ve had from warming temperatures in the last few years will not continue. It is critical to track the build-up of energy in our climate system so we can understand what is happening and predict our future climate.”

Although the rise in surface temperature in recent decades is the most well-known consequence of the thickening blanket of greenhouse gases around the Earth, it represents just a tiny fraction of the extra heat trapped. Most of the extra solar energy heads straight into the oceans, where it is stored as warmer water. Some goes into melting glaciers and polar ice, as well as warming the land and atmosphere.

Writing in the journal Science, the scientists say their calculations show that current measurements can only account for half the extra heat trapped by human emissions. Much of the rest is probably in the deep ocean, they say. Some heat increase has been detected in the upper ocean, but there is no routine monitoring below depths of about 3,000m.

Fasullo said: “Global warming at its heart is driven by an imbalance of energy. More solar energy is entering the atmosphere than leaving it. Our concern is that we aren’t able to entirely monitor or understand the imbalance. This reveals a glaring hole in our ability to observe the build-up of heat in our climate system.”

The missing heat is important, they say, because it could be released as weather phenomena such as El Niño, in which the upper waters of the tropical Pacific ocean warm, and La Niña, which often follows. La Niña events have been linked to cold weather, while El Niños drive storms.

The scientists say: “How can we understand whether the strong cold outbreaks of December 2009 are simply a natural weather phenomenon, as they seem to be, or are part of some change in clouds or pollution, if we do not have adequate measurements?”

Met Office claims to have found the AGW fingerprint

From The Reference Frame:

The Guardian just published a report about a text published by the Met Office:

Met Office analysis reveals ‘clear fingerprints’ of man-made climate change

In fact, there are two articles in the Guardian that “know” in advance that the Met Office will “strengthen” the case for human-induced climate change: the witches and prophets told them. The second article has a title that unmasks what is the real motivation behind the Met Office report:

How public trust in climate scientists can be restored

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, exactly 100 days after the AGW alarmism largely collapsed, the Met Office just found the fingerprints of Man imprinted everywhere in the climate. Because there hadn’t been any fingerprints before the paper, we must ask: How did they realize this ambitious goal? 😉

We learn that they didn’t even need a single research paper to do so. One review was enough! 🙂

A perfect storm is brewing for the IPCC

From The Telegraph (UK):

The news from sunny Bali that there is to be an international investigation into the conduct of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and its chairman Dr Rajendra Pachauri would have made front-page headlines a few weeks back. But while Scotland and North America are still swept by blizzards, in their worst winter for decades, there has been something of a lull in the global warming storm – after three months when the IPCC and Dr Pachauri were themselves battered by almost daily blizzards of new scandals and revelations. And one reason for this lull is that the real message of all the scandals has been lost.

The chief defence offered by the warmists to all those revelations centred on the IPCC’s last 2007 report is that they were only a few marginal mistakes scattered through a vast, 3,000-page document. OK, they say, it might have been wrong to predict that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035; that global warming was about to destroy 40 per cent of the Amazon rainforest and cut African crop yields by 50 per cent; that sea levels were rising dangerously; that hurricanes, droughts and other “extreme weather events” were getting worse. These were a handful of isolated errors in a massive report; behind them the mighty edifice of global warming orthodoxy remains unscathed. The “science is settled”, the “consensus” is intact.

But this completely misses the point. Put the errors together and it can be seen that one after another they tick off all the central, iconic issues of the entire global warming saga. Apart from those non-vanishing polar bears, no fears of climate change have been played on more insistently than these: the destruction of Himalayan glaciers and Amazonian rainforest; famine in Africa; fast-rising sea levels; the threat of hurricanes, droughts, floods and heatwaves all becoming more frequent.

Baby survives parents’ global warming suicide pact

These people were complete idiots. It’s a shame their children had to suffer because of their (the parent’s) stupidity.

From The Telegraph.com (UK):

Francisco Lotero, 56, and Miriam Coletti, 23, shot their daughter and her toddler brother before killing themselves.

Their son Francisco, two, died instantly after being hit in the back.

However, their unnamed daughter cheated death after the bullet from her father’s handgun missed her vital organs.

Police were alerted by worried neighbours who discovered the massacre three days after the shooting and the girl was taken to hospital.

The youngster is recovering in hospital in the town of Goya in the northern Argentine province of Corrientes, where doctors say she is out of danger.

Her parents said they feared the effects of global warming in a suicide note discovered by police.

You Can Call Him Al … But Al Won’t Call You Back

Hopefully the fact that ManBearPig (Al Gore) is becoming a laughing stock will make people rethink their beliefs in AGW and possibly take a look at the actual evidence rather than relying on someone like Gore to provide “talking points” for them to parrot. When Gore talks about what a fantastic business opportunity the environment provides, he’s talking about people like himself, who stand to make fortunes if only they can get legislation passed. What type of “opportunity” requires legislation to make it available? Usually one that favors a select few at the expense of everyone else.

From Fox News:

Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. But in the last three months, as global warming has gone from a scientific near-certitude to the subject of satire, Gore — the public face of global warming — has been silent on the topic.

The former vice president apparently finds it inconvenient even to answer calls to testify before the U.S. Senate. You can call him Al . . . but he won’t call back.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe — a prominent skeptic of global warming theory and the Republican leader of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee — issued a request for Gore to come testify on global warming. In an interview with FoxNews.com, Inhofe said he wants Gore to appear because “it will be interesting to ask him on what science he based his movie,” a film the senator considers “science fiction.”

Gore has yet to respond, but that didn’t prevent him from causing a stir at Apple’s shareholder meeting Thursday. According to CNET, Gore was seated in the first row while several stockholders bashed his high-profile views on climate change. One reportedly said Gore “has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted.” [emphasis mine]

Gore did not reply, and he has not commented on his blog or Twitter feed.

Fifteen Years With No Global Warming Doesn’t Mean There’s No Global Warming, Says EPA Chief

I guess you have to indulge in doublethink to understand this doublespeak. The fact that there’s no warming doesn’t mean anything; man is causing the warming that isn’t occurring now and laws need to be passed to stop it. The fact that she wants “to move aggressively” to do something about a condition which doesn’t exist should scare everyone.

From CNSNews (with video):

Fifteen years with no statistically significant increase in global temperatures does not mean that the human race is not causing the climate to change, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson told CNSNews.com on Tuesday.

Jackson reasserted her faith in manmade global warming in response to a question from CNSNews.com asking if she agreed with the recent statement by prominent climate scientist Phil Jones that there had been no statistically significant global warming since 1995.

Jackson also said “we need to move aggressively” to pass energy regulation legislation.

On Capitol Hill Tuesday, after a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing, CNSNews.com asked Jackson if she agreed or disagreed with one of the world’s top climate-change scientists that there had been no statistically significant global warming for the past 15 years.

“Do you agree with Dr. Phil Jones, the former head of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, that there has been no statistically significant global warming since 1995?” CNSNews.com specifically asked.
